Summer chaperoning opportunities for Japanese language teachers - paid

CIEE, Council on International Educational Exchange, is currently hiring chaperones for our 4-week Tokyo, Japan Language and Culture high school program. If you are looking for summer employment, please visit its website and apply. They have a paid training coming up in Minneapolis, MN, and are actively looking to hire before the training. The summer programs are in June and July and the compensation package includes:

 

  • $1,200 stipend for three-week Service & Leadership and Global Discovery programs
  • $1,500 stipend for four-week Language & Culture programstrip airfare to the program and in-person training and other travel costs (ground transport, meals, one checked bag)
  • Full room and board for the duration of the program and in-person training
  • Red Cross CPR and First Aid training (if you are not currently certified)
  • iNext International Travel and Health Insurance
  • Inclusion in all program activities and excursions
  • Visa fees where necessary
  • Vaccinations required by embassy in order to apply for a visa to the program location

Job Description

Johnson County Community College is looking to fill a full-time faculty position in the Foreign Languages department to teach Japanese language courses. JCCC is located in Overland Park, KS, the second largest city in the state of Kansas and part of the greater Kansas City Metro. The Kansas City Metro is known for its museums, restaurants, and music and art scenes. JCCC is similarly dedicated to creating and maintaining a rich cultural community, with an award-winning contemporary art museum and center for the performing arts located on campus.
JCCC is looking for a diverse pool of applicants for a full-time faculty position in the Foreign Language Department to teach Elementary, Intermediate and Conversational Japanese courses. The Foreign Language Department offers courses in French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish and is part of the Communications Division. Many of our students are non-traditional, military veterans, immigrants, international and first-generation college students. JCCC has a diverse student population and is dedicated to increasing its diversity.
The successful applicant for this job will teach the equivalent of 15 credit hours per semester in Japanese. This person will perform other duties expected of full-time faculty, including maintaining scheduled office hours; developing and revising curriculum; developing and implementing course and program assessment of student learning outcomes; participating in department, division and college meetings; serving on committees; participating in any Japanese related initiatives at JCCC; collaborating with and observing adjunct faculty teaching Japanese and other languages; collaborating and working successfully with other full-time faculty in the Foreign Language department; and other duties as assigned. Teaching assignments could be any combination of face-to-face day or evening courses, hybrid or online and are subject to change as needed. 
Additional responsibilities:
• Provide extra and co-curricular opportunities for Japanese language students.
• Participate in the planning and administration of all departmental initiatives.
• Participate in on-campus events promoting languages. 

All of the following are required for consideration:

·       Cover letter of 1-2 pages that addresses the required skills in the job posting and your teaching philosophy

·       3 letters of recommendation: at least one letter from a supervisor, and one from a colleague with whom you currently work

Letters of recommendation should address the following topics:

·       Ability to work well and collaborate with others

·       Ability to work independently on departmental initiatives

·       Familiarity with proficiency-based language learning

Required Skills

·       M.A. in Japanese or an MA in a related discipline with at least 18 hours of graduate work in Japanese as required by JCCC Higher Learning Commission criteria

·       Demonstrated ability to teach elementary and intermediate level Japanese language courses

·       Demonstrated excellent communication and collaboration skills

·       Documentation from ACTFL (OPI) of Advanced Mid or higher in Japanese

Preferred Skills

·       Demonstrated knowledge of using technology in the classroom

·       Demonstrated understanding of the climate of post-secondary institutions

·       Demonstrated knowledge of ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages

·       Ability to teach Chinese, French, German, Russian or Spanish with Higher Learning Commission credentials. 

·       PhD in Japanese, East Asian Languages or Cultures, or  Linguistics with a focus on the Japanese language

Required Experience

·       2 years teaching experience at the post secondary level and/or 4 years of high school teaching experience

·       Experience teaching Elementary and Intermediate level Japanese courses

Preferred Experience

·       Use of ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages

·       Experience teaching Chinese, French, German, Russian or Spanish at the post secondary level and/or 4 years of high school teaching experience

·       Experience using technology in the classroom
