May General Meeting: Dori White, The Ainu

  • Tuesday, May 23, 2017
  • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
  • Loose Park Garden Center, 5200 Wornall, KC, MO
Dori White graduated from the University of Kansas with her BA in East Asian Language and Cultures in 2009.  Although she concentrated her studies in Japanese culture, she had never studied the Ainu before she was accepted into the JET Program.  In July of 2010, she was placed in the small town of Mori, Hokkaido and it was there she was first introduced to the fascinating Ainu culture.  She lived in Mori for six years and traveled throughout the island of Hokkaido visiting various Ainu villages, museums and events. This will be her first time speaking at a JAS meeting.

Join us as we explore the world of the indigenous people of Northern Japan, the Ainu!  We will learn a little about their history, language, and culture. We will watch and listen to their distinct dances and music then try our hand using the traditional Mukkuri jaw harp.  There will also be a small craft workshop recreating Ainu designs.

There is no cost to attend this meeting. There will also be delicious Japanese food!
