Monstrous Japan: Exploring the Uncanny World of Yokai

June General Meeting

Online Zoom meeting

7 - 8 pm

Join us for ”Monstrous Japan,"  a virtual foray into the wild and wacky world of Japanese monster culture. Dr. Mindy Landeck, a specialist on Edo Japan, will situate monster culture within the broader scope of Japanese history and cultural practices, drawing upon examples that range from cute to demonic, and from the mysterious to the purely absurd. Along the way, you will discover how yokai culture inspired Pokemon and offered contemporary Japanese citizens a way to cope with the ongoing COVID pandemic.

Mindy Landeck is a cultural historian of Japan and an Associate Professor of East Asian Studies at Austin College in Texas.
