May General Meeting
Shakuhachi Lecture & Recital
featuring Haoyu Zhao
Tuesday, May 26th
7:00 - 8:30 pm
Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse
This lecture-recital offers an introduction to the Japanese bamboo flute, the shakuhachi, through a mix of performance and short talks. The program traces the instrument’s journey from the komusō—wandering Zen monks who used the shakuhachi as a tool for meditation—to its role in modern concert music.
Traditional pieces such as Hifumi Hachigaeshi, Shirabe, Sagariha, and Mukaiji present the instrument’s meditative sound world and expressive possibilities. Along the way, brief talks will guide the audience through the history, aesthetics, and playing techniques of the shakuhachi.
The program concludes with Makiri and Sunflower, bringing together traditional and contemporary styles and showing how the shakuhachi continues to evolve today.
